TVS Apache RR310 review: 2020 TVS Apache RR310 road test review



NEW DELHI: The thrill of motorcycling ensures a holy association between man and machine. Among different classes of two-wheelers, inarguably, performance motorcycles are highly aspirational and appealing to a significant section of youth.
Last decade or so, KTM has hogged the limelight with Dukes being a preferred choice in entry-level performance motorcycles. Then arrived the TVS flagship. The encouraging bit here is TVS’s progressive attempts at perfecting the RR310.
At the beginning of the year, I had put a few laps on the RR310 at Madras Motor Race track. By the end of the track day, I had a huge smile on my face, thanks to the updated mechanics, cutting-edge aerodynamics, and a decently refined motor. Post-lockdown, undoubtedly, it’s time for the road test.

RR310 is around the circuit for a while now, so has been the design. Sharp and edgy, RR looks no less than a toned-down superbike, with bi-LED projector headlamps, front-heavy fairing and a gradually minimal rear. The phantom black colour, which replaces the matte shade, does look extra appealing.
However, what has changed drastically is the engine and electronics.

The BS6 engine is refined, peppy and eager to build speeds. Vibrations on the handlebars and footpegs are bare minimum even when you hit 10,000-mark on the Revv meter. For numbers, the 313-cc, the reverse-inclined motor is rated at 34PS and 25.8 Nm. What’s interesting here is the new ride-by-wire throttle, which now allows multiple riding modes.

Switch to urban or rain mode, the output is subdued. The ABS intervention is greater, while the power and torque drop down to 25.8PS and 25Nm respectively. This along with the additional crawl feature, which allows the bike to glide through the traffic without any throttle input or clutch pull, makes the RR310 an easier motorcycle to live within the cities.
The bite from the brakes is superb as ever, however, what sweetens the overall deal is the new set of Michelin Road 5 tyres. Wearing Pirelli in 2017 to Michellin Road 5 now, RR310’s new pair of shoes traces an evolutionary trajectory. Super sticky in nature, the RR310, obviously, feels much planted at good speeds around the corner.

The race-tuned, slipper-clutch, which was employed to the 2019 edition makes its way to the facelift as well. The bike feels light on its feet and nimble to potter through.
During our test run of around 600 kilometres, RR310 was able to pull off over 31 kmpl.
The instrument console is updated and highly engaging than ever. The race-inspired telemetry is a perfect partner on the move. The switch box on the clip-on handlebars has been slightly redone to fix the buttons. I’m happy to report, no cheap plastics have been used anywhere.

On the open straights, RR310 clocks 0-60 kmph dash under three seconds, and in most cases, you would find yourself ahead of others on the streets. The motorcycle can hold on to triple-digit speeds for hours with little signs of fatigue. However, for touring purposes, what will impact you is the relatively firm seats. The perch is absolutely suitable for the tracks, however, it’s advisable to retro-fit cushiony seats if long-distance is your priority. Also, high off the ground, with least support, will you wish to be a pillion rider?
The TVS flagship is a brilliant package, especially due to the pricing. At Rs 2.40 lakh (ex-showroom), it’s the most affordable 300-cc performance bike that you can buy. That said, it still has a fair bit of ground to cover, when pitted against the KTM Duke 390.
